What are the personal development benefits of Tae Kwondo?

The benefits of Tae Kwon Do practice are vast. School aged children improve their performance and grades in school. Adults see reductions in stress and anxiety and report a better work life balance. Posture almost always improves for children and adults.

Below are some common benefits of being active in our classes.

    Our kids become:

For adults, how does Traditional Tae Kwondo at Asheville Sun Soo compare to other exercise venues like Zumba, running or CrossFit

Traditional Tae Kwon Do at Asheville Sun Soo for adults is a super rigorous, full-body work-out that works every muscle and joint through biomechanically sound range of motion with great attention to detail, facilitated by educated instructors with many years’ experience and the highest professional standards. Accompanying this rigor is a safe, respectful and inspiring community of high-achieving martial artists of all belt ranks.  The pace of class, the attention to detail, and the overall context of excellence stimulate our students’ entire being in an exciting way, facilitating continuous development in every area of life. On top of all of this, our adults become confident and skillful martial artists – a whole life practice, with a purpose.

What is the risk of injury from practicing Traditioal Tae Kwondo at Asheville Sun Soo?

Very Low. At Asheville Sun Soo, we practice with excellent fundamentals, self-control and respect for ourselves and our fellow students.

Does Asheville Sun Soo teach MMA-style fighting?

Yes and No. Traditional Tae Kwon Do is a comprehensive art, an amalgamation of several time-tested self-defense systems, including Shotokan Karate, Kung-Fu, Taekkyon, Aikido, Boxing and Judo. In that sense, yes: Traditional Tae Kwon Do taught at Asheville Sun Soo is a type of mixed martial art.

At the same time, however, at Asheville Sun Soo we do not promote the culture that has come to be associated with MMA through venues like the UFC cult craze.  Instead, we have a culture of excellence, community, respect and care for one another with great emphasis on maintaining a disciplined martial arts practice for a happy, healthy and successful life – mind, body and spirit.

Does Asheville Sun Soo offer any other martial arts or classes in addition to Tae Kwondo?

Yes. Our primary curriculum is Traditional Tae Kwon Do, with emphasis on blocking, striking and kicking. It also includes escape and submission concepts from Military Hapkido, hand- and foot-work from Traditional Boxing, and falling and throwing joint-locks from Classical Judo. We also offer a complementary curriculum in Traditional Jiujitsu which includes additional emphasis on rolling, falling, escapes and submissions.

    I Cannot Say Enough

“I cannot say enough good things about Sun Soo. My son has been
taking classes for about three years, and this school year, we’ve
taken advantage of the aftercare program. It is indispensable. The
teachers, the availability, the love and courtesy shown to all – it’s
priceless. All of their programs are run professionally, but with
genuine care woven throughout. My son will be going here for
classes, after school care and camps for as long as possible!”

    My two boys

“My two boys practice at Asheville Sun Soo and have been practicing here for over two years. There are many Tae Kwon Do schools to practice but Asheville Sun Soo is hands down the absolute best in WNC. The family atmosphere embodies the saying it takes a village to raise a child. There are so many parents that attend and practice with their children. It is a small community where everyone becomes a family member. The staff are awesome and have a team of instructors that are extremely knowledgeable and very detail oriented. They challenge their students to do their best and succeed each and every time. I have recommended Asheville Sun Soo to several friends and continue to recommend to anyone wishing to learn true self defense.”

    Where do I begin

Where to begin… I started attending Asheville Sun Soo back in August. I had originally gone in for my orientation almost a year and a half prior, but I let fear sway me out of following through (you know the whole “starting something new” and “what if I look like an idiot?” kind of fear). The itch to go never left, and I finally sucked up it up and joined this summer. I can honestly say that it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself. The students and teachers have quickly earned a place in my heart. Not only is the school true to the discipline, but it’s also a community, a giant family, and not to mention a killer workout. All of the instructors are incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and so, so skilled at meeting all students where they’re at. One of my most favorite things about Sun Soo is how the essence of community is embedded into their curriculum– even though the school is large with many students (adults as “old” as 80 and kids as young as 3) you have the opportunity to get to know and connect with everyone. Even if you’re a complete newbie, you are included as if you’re a seasoned student. I could say so many things about the palpable integrity, discipline, and care that is Asheville Sun Soo, but I’ll let you feel it for yourself, because you will the second you walk through the doors.

    I started my own practice

I started my own practice here two years ago as a 40-year-old, after decades of wanting to learn a martial art, and years of watching Sun Soo grow and develop in Asheville. The moment I gave myself permission to go for it and begin was a pivot point in my life. While I love the physical nature of the practice – the fitness benefits are wide and large – it is the precise and focused instruction from the staff that has most directly affected my life. Learning how to kick well is cool, but learning how to live well is immeasurable. I have no doubt that each and every one of the staff, as well as my fellow practitioners, want the absolute best for me in all things. The intention, integrity and inspiration in the school is deep. Now, practicing with my wife and four kids as well, I am proud to give to and receive from this school and this practice.

    our 11 year old daughters

Our 11 y.o. daughters started their marital arts journey here last May. Every interaction is positive. The instructors are a diverse bunch all with consistent skill in their craft as well as their management of the kids & participants. This is a fabulous place to help your kids develop physical skill, self-confidence, and accountability.

    The Mother's Day Special

My husband bought me the “Mother’s Day Special” at Sun Soo nearly two years ago – to say I was hesitant to start a martial arts practice as a 40 year old woman is a complete and utter understatement! In my almost two years of practice I have become a different person- a woman of confidence and strength that I didn’t know was possible for me. I am SO grateful to the staff and my fellow practitioners. Sun Soo is so much more than a place to learn martial arts- it’s a place to learn to be the very best version of yourself in every area of your life. If you’re at all on the fence about joining – just do it.

    Sun Soo is awesome!

Sun Soo is awesome! We have a 5 year old and have been attending classes twice each week for a few months now. The classes and belt progression is extremely well thought out and very conducive for motivating and keeping a child’s interest as well as teaching them valuable life skills both mentally and physically. I have seen growth in our child’s coordination, attention span and sense of pride. All of the teachers at Sun Soo are wonderful. They are consistent and dedicated. We have just been so impressed and we are so glad to be a part of the Sun Soo family!

been practicing Taekwondo at Sun Soo with my two kids

I have been practicing Taekwondo at Sun Soo with my two kids, 5 and 13 for over a year and it has been one of the best experiences! It is not easy to find activities that the whole family can be involved in and this practice has provided that and so much more. We started at Sun Soo shortly after moving to the area from Ohio and it provided some much needed community and stress release. It feels amazing to start or end the day with some punching, yelling and kicking. There is also a focus on personal discipline and being your best self on and off the mat that I love. I would recommend this practice to anyone and I am so grateful that I became involved. I honestly can’t picture where I would be without it now.
